SMALL TIPS FOR RESTYLING YOUR KITCHEN Restyling your kitchen can be a quite expensive thing to do, but it doesn’t have to cost much money if the basic is allright. With very little effort and money you can reach big results. Here at home my kitchen is an important place. I spend a lot of time there and it is open to our dining- and living room so we all have contact to each other. I love open spaces and lately I have been changing style around the house and now it was time to change the kitchen as well so it all would fit together. But a issue here at the moment is, (like by many people) that we have to be careful with the money we spent. We actually didn’t have any budget to use on redecorating the kitchen, so I thought of some small inexpensive ways to…

It’s carnival around the world and here in Holland as well. Unfortunately for our children we live in an area, which doesn’t do much with carnival. There are no parades in the area and you only find it here for the kids at school. If you want to celebrate a real carnival, you only find them in the south of Holland. There they live for the carnival.

DIY Concrete lamp I got this great idea for pimping my old Ikea lamp from Pinterest and I wanted to try it myself. A concrete lamp above the girls desks would be a perfect match with the new style they now have there, but I was afraid of buying one completely made out of concrete because it properly would be to heavy for our celling. The lamp that I have from Ikea is very light of weight and only need a thin layer of concrete all over so I imagine that it would be an easy project to do. I must admit that I have never worked with concrete before. You see a lot of great DIY’s everywhere with concrete and I have for a while wanted to try different thing out with that material and this will be my first project. This is what you need for making…

The fall is all around us and it’s time to give you a recipe for a very special Spice cake of mine, which will fit perfectly for a rainy day in the fall. The recipe I have had since I was a girl. I think I made it for the first time at school when I was 11/12 years old?? I still love this Spice cake very much and wanted to blow some new life into it. Normally I only put a little bit of icing sugar on top of the cake but this time I wanted it to be more luxereus and special. I decide to put some caramelized nuts onto it. I found a special mix in the store with different kinds of nuts together with cranberries and raisins and that was going to be for my topping. I have never tried to make caramelize nuts before so…

I have now been living in Holland for 20 years, but one think never change I guess and that is the love for Danish pastry. I just love the Danish bakery. It’s quite different from the Dutch one, but luckily I can make the most things myself here in Holland and today I was in a mood for the Cinnamon roll. Cinnamon rolls are so delicious!! A little bit hard on the outside but soft and sweet on the inside. What I particular like about them is the spice Cardamom that is inside the dough. It gives it a special taste together with the cinnamon. Today I wanted to try something new with the rolls. I wanted to add some apple to some of them. (I saw it somewhere on the internet and thought it could be nice to try) I split the portion of dough in two. One with…

Finally I can show you my finished result of my stairway renovation. It has been 3 weeks by now and normally it shouldn’t take that long to finish this kind of job, but we had some small problems here and there. For example for the banisters I order some special holders, but didn’t like them when we placed them, so we had to look for some new ones and wait for them to come. The system we have made for our coats we also had to wait for. And I thought I had found a great coat/hat holder on the internet (second hand) but when I picked it up it didn’t look that great anyway, so I had to look for another one there as well. But now I am very happy with the result. It has become nice and bright again, and I love the dark banister as a…

Leftovers! I think we all now and then have some leftovers from our dinners, and most of the times I think it’s a pity to through it out just because it’s not enough for another meal for the whole family. I have here found a great way ‘What to do with leftovers’ in another meal and it almost doesn’t matter what kind of meal you have left. You can use this recipe in so many ways and combine it with extra vegetables or what you have in your kitchen cabinets ( rice, couscous, pasta or with different kind of cheese.) This time I had a leftover of pasta with pomkin and gorgonzola. The dish was perfect as it was, but we couldn’t eat it all and what was left wasn’t enough for all 4 of us the next evening. So I decided to make a Quiche with the leftover. Leftovers:…

At the moment when I am busy painting the stairway every day, I do not have much energy over to cook something special in the evening. Yesterday I decided to make an easy vegetable soup. I like to make something out of what I have and like that create a new recipe. Sometimes it works out perfectly and other times it’s just okay for that one time. The vegatable soup from yesterday turned out really nice, so nice that I want to share it here with you on the blog. Vegetable soup: This is what I used for the soup: 1 ½ zucchini, 2 celery, 1 red onion, 1 leek, 1 clove of garlic, 6 small sweet potatoes 1 liter Chicken stock 50 grams of soft goat cheese 100 gram crème fraise 3 dl milk 100 gram parmesan Salt and pepper Clean and cut all vegetables into small pieces. Put…

Do you recognize this, that you suddenly notice that something really needs to be painted at home? You didn’t notice it before (even though it properly has been like that for some time) but for you it just looks awful now and you know what to do! I got that feeling a few weeks ago with our stairway and hall. My husband hates painting and is not very good at it anyway, so I made my own plan and got started with my new project here at home. Stairway renovation! But when you start on one thing you see that other things need to be done as well, and so the project gets bigger and bigger. I first wanted to do the stairs + the walls. But now I am doing that + painting 7 doors. We have bought new door handles and banisters for the stairs and I am…

Bulgur/Quinoa salad This weekend I had a birthday party from one of my best friends here in Holland. It was a very different kind of birthday. Not like all others, because she had invited 9 of her best girlfriends to an oil painting workshop. How special is that? We had a lot of fun with painting. Later this week I will show you pictures of our workshop and great results, but today I will like to share this recipe I made for all of us in the evening, when we were done painting. We all brought some food with us so we didn’t have to cook after an intensive workshop. I brought a Bulgur/Quinoa salad with homemade pita bread and tzatziki. A light but filling meal with a lot of fiber’s and vitamins in, perfect for after an intensive afternoon of painting. This is what you need for the Bulgur/Quinoa…

I love to recycle old stuff and give it a new life, and I specially have a weakness for wooden blocks. I don’t know why? but you can do so many different things with them. I will here give you a description for a DIY Memory game that you can easily make yourself. All you need is for this DIY Memory: Wooden blocks ( very easy to find in the second hand shops) Important is to look for the same shape, otherwise the game will be too easy. Paper in different colors (paper with a lot of different patterns and pictures will make it more fun and colorful) Think about using old magazines and leftovers from wall paper. Try to use what you already have at home. A scissor or a hobby knife Glue (for paper) A little punch. You can use any form you like. You can also easily…
