Birthday cake

Today I want to share my best and most colourful children’s birthday cake. We always make this cake here at home for Alieke or Emmelie’s birthday.

When you have children it is so funny and nice to create small traditions for special occasions. They can become so important that it can change the feeling of a special day without it.

Where does the cake come from?

The idea of a children’s birthday cake like mine originally comes from Denmark and is actually an overall tradition there. It’s called a ‘Kagemand or Kagekone‘ translated ‘a cake man‘ or ‘a cake woman‘. It’s a Danish cake in the shape of a boy or a girl, which is traditionally eaten at birthdays and anniversaries.

This cake is usually made with either a soft yeast dough topped with brown sugar or a Danish pastry dough topped with icing glacé. In any case, the cake is decorated with candy and festive Danish flags. Traditionally, the birthday party starts with the cake figure being decapitated or dismembered, while all the children scream.

Traditions

Because of my danish nationality, I want to bring some small traditions with me into our Dutch life. This one was definitely one which was perfect for a children’s birthday party. I decided to make my ‘Kagekone’ a little bit different because of several reasons. First of all, because this recipe is very child-friendly. Children can be very picky and my experience was that the majority really liked this recipe. Second, because I find it much easier to bake a big cake instead of first shaping the cake.

Every year I make one for my girl’s birthday. And every time we decorate it a bit differently just for the fun of it. I use to decorate it together with the girl’s, but now they have become so big that they do it themselves.

Alieke just turned 15 years last week and this was her version. We allways try to make the hair look a little bit like their own, but is difficult without much practicing and with the candy you can find in the store. The most important thing is that it’s colourful and delicious and the children just love this cake.

I just found some old pictures of our birthday cake’s from the past couple of years and it’s very clear that we have no boy’s here in this house. But you could easily make a boy instead with shorts and a t-shirt.

The Best and most Colourful children’s Birthday cake

Ingredients

  • 6 eggs
  • 225 g sugar
  • 4 tsp vanilla
  • 250 g wheat flour
  • 100 g Shredded coconut
  • 2 tsp baking pouder
  • 200 g butter
  • 4 banana's
  • powdered sugar
  • water
  • candy

Instructions

  • Melt the butter and let it cool down.
  • Whisk the eggs, the sugar and the vanilla sugar airy and white.
  • Mix flour, coconut and baking powder together and gently flip it into the dough alternately with the melted butter.
  • Turn the mashed banana's in.
  • Pour the dough into a greased form and bake the cake in the middle of the oven for approx. 50 minutes.
  • Put it on a baking rack and let it cool.
  • Mix the powdered sugar with a little bit of water (be very careful with adding water! It can easily get to thin) and make a creamy paste.
  • Cover the cake with the icing and start immediately with decorating before the icing get stiff.
  • The cake will be good for several day's if you still have something left.
